    Interesting to know about ISBNs, I didn't realise you don't have to have one. Is this the same with regards to print books? I always thought you needed one, especially when it comes to barcodes. Also, would you recommend starting with an ebook or print book as a knew author? Would I be better off doing both? I''m also keen for your dive into Atticus. Cheers.

    Question for ya: with the rapid of development of AI tools, do you think fiction and nonfiction book markets will simply become over-saturated, and only established authors will have continued success? I.E. harder and harder for new authors with so much AI content?

    • @gfbaker13
      @gfbaker13 День тому

      One thing that might set your mind at ease: the fiction world is already saturated. When you're going up against thirty million other books, what's another ten to twenty million? You're still a grain of sand on a beach. The journey to becoming established will be the same, regardless of how many AI books flood the market: slowly building a readership through networking, promoting, and marketing.

    With how graphic some of my more violent scenes are, the AI refuses to do it, since they also go against their rules. So, learning how to get around NSFW filters, I try to think of how to adapt it to my situation. You have to understand that when it comes to my fight scenes, I like raw violence, especially when the scene is supposed to be intense.

So many capabilities either simply missing or insufficient for anything. But even if it was, the idea that the user isn’t responsible for the story would still be wrong.

    I've been using Novelcrafter and the various LLMs to create an SF storyline, then a chapter breakdown, then chapter beats. I've asked it to use Save the Cat, Murphy's structure and The Hero's Journey for structure suggestions. The problem I've found is that all the storylines, the conflicts and the characters seem to come from some gigantic Young Adult soup, with over-dramatic situations, banal motivations and adolescent conflicts. I wouldn't expect Philip K. Dick levels of sophistication from these things, but I don't think they're close to useable yet. And the prose is the worst kind of anonymous, 1st-year writing student guff, without personality or real wit. I was initially excited by the speed and range of options produced - but that's the problem: AI produces a wide but shallow range of options. As a result of 3 weeks' playing with it, I've got a simplistic storyline and half a dozen passable characters. I've started writing the book, but I'm using only the slightest hints of situations and background from the AI results, and writing all the prose myself, which I'm happy to do. This might be a boon to self-publishers (of which I was one for 14 years till finding a publisher) but one's time might be better spent learning to write rather than learning to ask the right prompt questions. 😊

    Amazon Kindle Weaver was a fictional concept introduced as an April Fool's Day joke in 2024. The idea presented was a revolutionary service allowing Kindle users to create custom novels tailored to their preferences using advanced AI. Users could select genres, styles, characters, and settings, generating personalized stories almost instantly. The joke also included a fabricated controversy about intellectual property rights, adding to the realism of the prank. The concept, while fictional, sparked interest in the possibilities of personalized reading experiences facilitated by AI

    I've found AI does save me time in research. I write fantasy and sci/fi and used to spend HOURS of my writing time trying to find information on some obscure thing that would get two lines of a mention in my book but I couldn't move on until I got it down for little details it might affect. AI being at least surface-level interpretive allowed me to ask very specific questions (rather than searching hoping someone had written something tangentially related to what I wanted to know) and get specific answers. I haven't found much benefit in it generating the actual text, and choose not to use it for that, but research ... the research time saved is a game changer (always have to remember to check sources and not just take it at face value).

    I used Claude Opus and Sonnet for my 98K manuscript. It told me it was a series of scenes, not a full novel. So, I revised. Later, I used it for a developmental edit and assessment. I revised again. Now it’s with a human editor. It definitely helped during the revision but haven’t tried it for writing a draft, not sure I want to either. That said, I was throughly impressed how it could analyze the manuscript and provide feedback regarding plot holes, character arc, pacing etc

    Hi, I signed up an tested it with a question I used this week at Chatgpt and Claude Sonet failed. I asked ChatG and today, Claude Sonet, the following question "explain me the story circle plot structure developed by Dan Harmon, the creator of Rick and Morty, to create meaningful and compelling stories in almost no time to write a book" Results: ChatG gave me 8 part reply with each part carrying an explanation of each stage that made it ready to use. Meanwhile Sonet, with the same question, gave me 8-part one-liners summarized reply and asked me if I needed it to elaborate more. The Retry in Claude gave me less information than the previous request. So far, the Jury is still out on this one for me.

      That’s fine. Everyone’s different. I still make shorter videos, but I like to be able to make more in depth videos.

    Why does claude have characters say "And I'm the Queen of England!" every time it wants to have them express disbelief? really weird!

      That's hilarious! Way better than ChatGPT constantly having a character say, "Don't worry, we'll get through this together." every time a situation gets a little tense.

    Is this technology going to tank the marketability of stories to quality publishers and flood the self-publish market? It has to wash out. I think writers will have to develop a personal brand more than ever.

      Yeah personal branding and marketing will be more important than ever. That said, the market was already saturated with bad books. And Amazon typically filters those out pretty well so only the good ones show, which was already only the top 1% of all books on Amazon. Saturating the market even more will not change that.

    Claude is brilliant but if you're all about testing writing models I implore you to add Gemini 1.5 via Google AI Studio with filters turned off. It is absolutely, absolutely amazing. Please check it out and add to your tests against these models. It's the darkhorse for writing.

    I have found recently that ChatGPT 4o is just using my prompt verbatim in the response, very frustrating. I am thinking about moving my subscription over to Claude.
